BOWRAL, NSW – A new community energy project in the Southern Highlands is showing how solar, battery storage, and artificial intelligence can work together to strengthen local energy resilience and cut reliance on the traditional grid. The initiative, launched at the Gibraltar Bowral hotel and event venue, brings together global inverter and storage provider Sungrow, UNSW Sydney, and local installer JT Solar Technology (trading as Aussie Hybrid Solar).
Why This Project Matters for Commercial Sites
For hotels and function centres, energy demand swings sharply through the day. Rising power bills and the need for uninterrupted supply make smarter management a growing priority. This virtual power plant pilot tackles those issues by integrating on-site solar storage, and intelligent control software. Rather than simply producing and storing electricity, the system continuously decides whether to use, store, or discharge power based on real-time solar output, site load, tariff signals, grid requirements, and battery condition.
The Hardware Behind the System
Sungrow PowerKeeper ST200CF and SH110CX Hybrid Inverter
At the core of the installation are Sungrow's ST200CF PowerKeeper battery units, arranged across four stackable racks, and the SH110CX hybrid inverter, supplied and fitted by Aussie Hybrid Solar. These hardware components are orchestrated by UNSW's energy management system, which optimises charge-discharge cycles autonomously.
"The value here extends far beyond financial payback," said Richard Chen, Business Development Manager at Sungrow. "A system of this scale must be safe, reliable, and responsive to changing energy needs – and that demands close cooperation between engineering and commercial teams."
Modular Design That Grows With Demand
The PowerKeeper's modular, DC-coupled design allows flexible capacity expansion to match variable loads. Its plug-and-play integration with existing PV and the SH110CX inverter simplifies retrofits, avoiding costly transformer upgrades or protracted grid approvals. The compact footprint and flexible mounting options suit hospitality environments where space and aesthetics matter, and it carries comprehensive safety certifications.
Validated through extreme-condition tests and equipped with real-time battery health monitoring, the unit provides stable long-term operation and full-site backup to prevent venue downtime. As core hardware for AI scheduling and VPP dispatch, it automatically adjusts charging and discharging to boost self-consumption of renewables and improve overall energy resilience.
What the Installer Says
"Sungrow supplied robust technical data and independent verification of our calculations, which gave us much greater confidence in system sizing and in presenting potential savings to the client," noted Steve Doyle, co-owner of JT Solar and Voltval. "That level of technical collaboration has been outstanding."
A Practical Model for the Future
By bringing together solar, storage, and AI-driven management, the Gibraltar Bowral project illustrates a practical model for more flexible, reliable, and renewable-focused energy systems – one that serves both commercial needs and broader community goals.
